Volunteer with JSPCA/JPAS!
What do volunteers do?
Volunteering is a great way for anyone to support the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter, and even meet the pet of your dreams! There are lots of ways to help, from walking dogs, cuddling cats, to office work or transporting pets.
Shelter Dog Socialization
Volunteers provide shelter dogs with socialization, exercise and training. During their visit, they take the dogs out for a walk, encourage good manners and obedience, provide them with human companionship, and even some grooming (brushing, bathing, etc.).
Spending time with our furry felines is rewarding for both people and cats alike! While our cats wait on their forever homes, they thrive on human companionship and playtime!
Special Events and Pet Adoption Days
Volunteers help handle the animals and speak with potential adopters. We try to find a good match for each family so that both the animal and the family will be happy. Volunteers may also help with special events such as Pet Fest, which happens each fall, fundraisers, spay/neuter efforts, transporting animals etc.
Junior Camp Counselor
If you're age 15-18 looking for service hours during the summer, consider becoming a Junior Volunteer Camp Counselor! Please email email@example.com for more information.
Due to Covid-19, the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter is temporarily unable to accommodate volunteers. We will update this page, and our Facebook page, when this changes.

About the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter
The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter (JPAS) is an entity of Jefferson Parish government. It is an 'Open Intake Municipal Animal Shelter', which means that they accept every stray animal found in Jefferson Parish. They also accept Jefferson Parish residents pets they wish to 'surrender', by appointment.
JPAS has two locations:
East Bank Shelter 1 Humane Way, Harahan, 70123
West Bank Shelter 2701 Lapalco Blvd., Harvey, 70058
If you are part of an organization that would like to volunteer as a GROUP, please email Renee, our Volunteer Coordinator, at email@example.com to make arrangements.
If you are 11-15 years old, you must be accompanied by a parent/guardian while at the shelter. Your parent/guardian must also complete volunteer training.
The JPAS volunteer program does not give credit for court ordered community service hours. If this is what you need, please call the shelter for information. East Bank (504) 736-6111 or West Bank (504) 349-5111
Court Ordered Volunteers
Call the East Bank 504-736-6111 or West Bank 504-349-5111 to schedule your hours. You must wear a black T shirt while working on your community service hours. When you show up, you'll sign in, receive a community service badge, and sign out when you leave. Please leave valuables in your car.
If after completing your service, you wish to become a regular ongoing volunteer with dog handling privileges, ask a clerk for a volunteer application or fill out our online version above. You will then be contacted to schedule required volunteer orientation.
