CAN I GIVE MY PET A RABIES VACCINATION MYSELF?
Louisiana state law requires that a rabies vaccination be administered by a licensed veterinarian. Jefferson Parish offers public rabies vaccinations on Tuesdays at the West Bank shelter location, from 10am-12pm, and Wednesdays at the East Bank shelter location, from 10am-11:30pm. Please call for an appointment.
WHY SHOULD I LICENSE MY PET?
Lost and Found: As you probably agree, we would rather your pet not ever be brought to an animal shelter. If your pet is wearing a Jefferson Parish rabies license, we can easily trace the number and contact you regarding his or her whereabouts. This is significantly less stress on you, your pet, and your local animal shelters.
Money Generated: The money that is taken in from license fees is used for other animal control operations such as supplementing the cost of animal care and conducting a low-cost and no-cost spay and neuter program for our residents. It is the LAW!: It is much less expensive to pay the fee than to pay the fine. It is required that every dog or cat in Jefferson Parish have a license within 30 days of ownership.
MY PET ALWAYS STAYS IN MY HOUSE. DOES HE STILL NEED TO BE LICENSED?
Yes. All animals over the age of three months must be licensed.
HOW MUCH DOES A LICENSE COST?
Unaltered dog or cat: $25.00; Altered dog or cat: $20.00; Replacement fee: $5.00
