Shelter Buddies Reading Program
Now Accepting Registrations!
SHELTER BUDDIES IS ON HOLD. WE WILL UPDATE WHEN NEW DATES BECOME AVAILABLE.
The Shelter Buddies Reading Program was designed to help shelter pets become more adoptable. Reading to the animals helps to bring comfort to and reduce the anxiety of shelter pets, and it nurtures empathy in children. Participants sit outside of the dog/cat/rabbit’s enclosure and read to them.
Reading helps shy animals learn to relax around people and teaches high energy animals that calm behavior is desirable. When children tell stories to the animals, it also helps them develop their own reading skills!
WHO: Animal loving Kids ages 4 - 12
COST: $10 per child one time fee.
HOW DO I SIGN UP? Email Renee at email@example.com with your name, your child's name, and date you wish to initially attend. Bring cash or a check made out to JSPCA with you on your selected date.
PLEASE NOTE: One parent/guardian is required to attend the training and must accompany the child every time they come to read.
Please bring your favorite book(s). We do have a growing library that you are welcome to use as well.
You only need to attend ONE 20 minute training session. After that, you can come read for as little or as long as you'd like during designated hours.
Cancellations: Please notify us firstname.lastname@example.org or phone at 410 409-4817 at least one week prior to your scheduled session if you need to cancel or reschedule. You can be added to an upcoming open session. Due to high demand, we are unable to accommodate changes within seven days of a scheduled session.
Additional Note: The Jefferson SPCA is a non profit created to support and assist the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelters. The Jefferson SPCA is located at the Jefferson Feed store in Jefferson, LA. The animals at this location are animals pulled from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter (JPAS) and are available for adoption. At this time, the Shelter Buddies Reading Program takes place at the Jefferson Feed store, not at the JP animal shelter, (although plans for this program at the JPAS are in the works)!
